One of the keys in determining what color the original Hebrews and Israelites were is the women that so many of them chose to marry:

Abraham: "And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the EGYPTIAN... and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife" (Genesis 16:3).

Ishmael: "And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of EGYPT" (Genesis 21:21).

Joseph: "And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On" (Genesis 41:45).

Moses: "And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an ETHIOPIAN woman" (Numbers 12:1).

Solomon: "And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David..." (1Kings 3:1).

Joseph, Moses, and Paul

Were Mistaken For Being Egyptian

Joseph: "And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt... And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him" (Genesis 42:3-8).

Moses: "Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day? And they said, AN EGYPTIAN DELIVERED US OUT OF THE HAND OF THE SHEPHERDS..." (Exodus 2:19).

Paul: "And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek? Art not thou (Paul) that EGYPTIAN, which before these days madest an uproar... But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew" (Acts 21:37-39).

Testimony of Strabo

(63/64 - ca. AD 24; a Greek historian)

"Accordingly, the Jews have places assigned them in Egypt, wherein they inhabit, besides what is peculiarly allotted to this nation at Alexandria, which is a large part of that city... In Egypt, therefore, this nation is powerful, BECAUSE THE JEWS WERE ORIGINALLY EGYPTIANS" (Strabo quoted in Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, Book 14, Chapter 7.)

Testimony of Tacitus

(ca. 56 - ca. 117; a Roman senator and historian of the Roman Empire)

"As I am about to relate the last days of a famous city, it seems appropriate to throw some light on its origin. Some say that the Jews were fugitives from the island of Crete, who settled on the nearest coast of AFRICA about the time when Saturn was driven from his throne by the power of Jupiter. Evidence of this is sought in the name. There is a famous mountain in Crete called Ida; the neighboring tribe, the Idaei, came to be called Judaei by a barabarous lengthening of the national name. Others assert that in the reign of Isis the overflowing population of Egypt, led by Hierosolymus and Judas, discharged itself into the neighbouring countries. MANY, AGAIN, SAY THAT THEY WERE A RACE OF ETHIOPIAN ORIGIN, who in the time of king Cepheus were driven by fear and hatred of their neighbours to seek a new dwelling-place" (Tacitus, The Histories, Book 5.2).

Egypt and Africa served as a nurturing womb for the seed of Israel, who first entered there as a small tribe of only about seventy-five souls (Acts 7:14). In Egypt, over the course of two hundred and fifteen years, Israel was transformed from an embryo into a mighty and powerful nation of millions that outnumbered the Egyptians themselves (Exodus 1:9 & 12:37). At this point, the womb that had carried Israel for so long went into delivery, and Israel left her mother's land of Egypt and entered into her Father's land (Israel) flowing with milk and honey. However, is it any wonder that the ancients looked upon Israel occasionally and said, You sure do look like your mother (Egypt, Africa)?

Note: The images used above are primarily taken from the 18th Dynasty of Egypt, at which time much of Israel's two hundred and fifteen  years of dwelling in Egypt took place and which, coincidentally, produced some of Egypt's most well-known figures: Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and King Tutankhamun. It wasn't until the emergence of the 19th Dynasty and the reign of Rameses II that Israel's enslavement began (Exodus 1:11).
